Classes in the Department stared in 1994 and initially took the form of seminars and tutorials for 4^th year students of the Faculty of Medicine. The curriculum was based on foreign models, mainly on the English and Dutch ones. However, great emphasis was put on its adjustment to Polish realities. Therefore, there are many references to Polish family doctors’ practice in the present curriculum: issues concerning patient – doctor communication, conflict solving or the details of contracts with the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia).

Part of the classes takes place in family doctors’ practices in Lodz, which allows students to be immersed directly into their work. Beginning from 2005/2006 academic year, Department has also started teaching in Family Medicine for foreign students.
